So Hasty! gave us a pretty good idea how he's building up his Big Dummy, so now it's my turn. Here it is:
Crankset | Suntour XC Pro triple 110/74 bcd square taper, 170mm arms; bashguard/38/24 |
Bottom Bracket | Shimano Sealed Cartridge (probably a BBUN-72) |
Pedals | Nashbar-badged Wellgo ATB Beartrap |
Front Derailleur | Shimano top pull |
Rear Derailleur | Shimano Deore XT Long cage 8 Speed |
Shifters | Shimano Deore DX Thumbies |
Cassette | 11-32t 8 Speed |
Chain | KMC tandem/recumbent 8 Speed |
Hubs | Shimano Deore 36 spoke 6-bolt disc (M756) |
Spokes | Wheelsmith Stainless Steel 14/15 |
Rims | Syncros DP32 Aluminum Black Anodized |
Tires | Schwalbe Big Apple 26 x 2.35 |
Brakes | Hayes HFX Mag Hydraulic Disc with 203mm rotors |
Brake Levers | Hayes HFX Mag |
Headset | Cane Creek S2 |
Handlebar | Nitto Albatross CroMoly 56cm |
Stem | Salsa Aluminum |
Grips | TBD |
Saddle | Brooks B.17 or B.67 |
Seatpost | Syncros or Thompson Aluminum 27.2 |
The two snags I know of at the moment are: a. whether I can find a Hayes brake line long enough to reach the rear brake (probably a 2500mm) and b. whether I have a decent top-pull front derailleur in stock with a 28.6 clamp. If any of you experts knows anything about the former, I'm open to suggestion.
Meanwhile, I haven't gotten the frame back from the LYBS yet, but will soon. Spring's a coming, so I hafta get it in gear.

Ooohhh, very nice! I have a pair of Big Apples on my Xtracycle. I really love 'em. Gives a nice ride even when loaded with 200 lbs of stuff.
I saw that post about the Big Blue Truck. Glad to hear the Big Apples are worth it! I got mine from Jim when he came down here for Swap this year...
I got mine from Jim as well. I bought the Xtracycle FreeRadical conversion kit from him and he built the front wheel I'm using on the Blue Truck. When I picked up all that stuff from him, about a year ago, he recommended the Big Apples. Funny, he just happened to have a pair sitting there.
no, no, not the deore thumbies...if you're going to use an 8spd cassette, use those suntour 8spd thumbies you had at the last swap. better shifting than with the deore (7spd) thumbies cause the suntour/shimano 8spd spacing is actually the same, but shimano 7spd is not the same as shimano 8spd...and retrofriction front, too!
and I can probably find you a 28.6 top pull front der...
D'oh! [*Smack the forehead*] You told me that then and I fergit. I just ran across them too...lost and found in the swirl that is the rebirth of the Bike Cave as the Bike Salon (pictures soon, I promise.) I've got a nice Deore DX left that I got from Dave at the swap.
Sure would appreciate a top puller if you've got one. Seems I've come up short. Trade you a Campy for it...
peace!
