Wow, I'll tell you, the dogs sure wanted a good run for this early in the season. We rolled the first 12 miles or so at such a nice, steady pace, and then as soon as we hit the first decent-sized hill: WHAM! Everybody was out of the saddle and into the hammerfest. Everybody but me.
My view for much of this ride was a bunch of butts, often in the distance...

For me it was more the somewhat erratic pace that was difficult. But maybe I'm just spoiled by usually doing long rides either on my own or as part of a brevet where people are usually good about pacing themselves.
I would agree that it was erratic...hard charging until the realization was made that people had been dropped, then slow or stop. Maybe it was the combination of people on this one? I dunno.
Yeah, probably also just too large a group, in combination with the hills and the fact that it's early in the season.
...and a combination of some people who had ridden consistently all winter and some who had not.
