Schnowschtorm 2
Yesterday was an eerie repeat of last year's December first snowstorm, except that this year it fell on a Saturday. I didn't go to the farmer's market, but I did end up riding to my LBS to get a shim so I could put a 7-speed cassette on an 8-speed hub. Not easy going—see the photo of the bike path above. On top of that 3 inches of snow, we got an inch or two of sleet, followed by maybe a quarter- to half-inch of rain. Miserable shoveling. Can't wait until tonight, when temperatures are forecast to drop into the teens...

7-speed cassette on an 8-speed hub? I'm curious what that's about.
I remember vividly your entry from last year about your snow because I was wanting snow so bad. That storm missed us last year. This years storm gave us 10 inches of snow and I'm lovin' it.
Yeah, my road bike still has a 7-speed drivetrain, and I pulled a spoke though the rear rim earlier this summer. (Time to cut back on the cookies, I guess.) I had a spare 700c wheel with the same axle length, but with an 8-speed cassette body. Because an 8-speed freehub body is wider than a 7-speed freehub body, you have to shim the 7-speed cassette to get the lockring to hold it on. I was using a substitute, but it really was time to get the real thing.
Glad to hear you got the snowfall of your dreams up there. How are you feeling these days?
I just bought an internally geared 8-speed hub, so when you said 8-speed hub, that's what came to mind. Can you imagine a 7-speed cassette on an 8-speed internally geared hub?
I'm feeling well rested. However, I continue to have difficulty recovering fully from even the easiest rides. I no longer feel it is just over-training. After all, I didn't overdue it that much. After talking to family with the same affliction, my symptoms seem to indicate it's caused by a gluten reaction. It will take awhile to get my gut back to normal. Despite this, life is good, and things could be a lot worse. For that I'm thankful.
Line that up with a triple crank and you'd have a 168-speed transmission! Take that Campy!
Glad to hear you're feeling better and hope you can figure things out in time to do the Arrowhead...
