The Earth Moved

Earthquake woke me up at 03:58. Laid awake for a while trying to decide whether it was a quake or one of those new, really quiet snowplows. Turned out to be a 4.3 centered near Sycamore IL, down there bei DeKalb. The upper midwest isn't known for earthquakes, but we do have one now and then.

Weird, isn't it? We had one last year and it woke me up during the night. I thought it was a garbage truck going by. Only later did I realize what happened.

I believe that one was centered somewhere in Southern IL, if I remember correctly.

Huh, I don't think I would've expected you to feel it all the way in Madison. You're a good 150 miles from Chicago, aren't you?

It was weird. I think we had a similar one a couple of years back, and I distinctly remember one way back in 1988.

Fritz, it's about 120 miles to downtown Chicago as the crow flies, but about 85 to the epicenter. A lot of people at work said it didn't wake them up.

I live on Madison's east side and I believe that the earthquake woke me up too, indirectly. My eleven month old son woke up at 4am. At the time, I thought that he was just waking up for a snack.

I would have thought snow plow too. Everytime, for some reason, it shakes my house, which is stone, when they plow by.
